Honey Heartbeat is a new North Texas Idol group that I recently had the pleasure of working with. The goal for this shoot was to create promo pictures for their social media debut.
This was to be one of the largest group shoots I’ve done with 9 models, their manager, and about 4 or 5 significant others and friends helping out.
As this was a new group, I wanted everyone to feel welcome, as well as know that they had arrived at the studio. We had our sign out front greeting everyone as they drove in.
My wife and I purchased this chalk board for our wedding in 2018 and afterwards we had it sitting in the entrance way, wondering what we could do with it. I think we had the idea at the same time to use it for photoshoots. (We kept the bottom words the same as a little reminder of it’s initial purpose.)
Honey Heart had already determined a color scheme. The group wanted a yellow backdrop; luckily I had a yellow backdrop in the garage that I had used for a Mother’s Day shoot a couple years ago. It was a great match for the look they were going for.
For lighting, I used a 7′ umbrella with a diffuser as the key light, a medium soft box for fill and a strip light for back lighting. Most of the photos were shot at iso 100, f/8, 1/125th of a second.
Their manager had a well-developed social media strategy and knew all the shots he wanted to get for the group. He even helped out by demonstrating some of the poses. (Saving me from having to do so myself.)
This allowed me to focus on making sure the lighting was capturing their best looks and offering minor adjustments to the poses.
Through it all, the group was taking some behind the scene shots and boomerrangs.
Be sure to check this group out on Instagram at HoneyHeartbeat and follow them for more photos!
